SPORTIJSF;

now unlikely to emulate Morton‘s feat of conceding 100 goals in a league season. I Motherwell v Dundee Utd Fir Park. Motherwell (all Motherwell buses pass ground). 3pm. Having beaten both Old Firm clubs this year already. much-improved Motherwell could deal a severe blow to United‘s title hopes today. especially if Robert Russell retains his recent excellent form. I Rangers v St Mirren lbrox Stadium. Glasgow (2 mins lbrox underground). 3pm. Perhaps the easiest tie for any of the top four. unless Aberdeen find their visitors Hearts are preoccupied with next week‘s European match. FIRST DIVISION I Ayr v Meadowbank Thistle Somerset Park. Somerset Road. Ayr. 3pm. Both teams are still in some danger of being relegated. and will not be content to settle for a draw. which remains. however. the likeliest result. I Clyde v Clydebank Firhill. Firhill Road. Glasgow. 3pm. I Falkirk v Dunfennline Brockville. Falkirk (100 yards from Grahamston station). 3pm. Only a win will suffice for the home side. whose hopes of catching Dunfermline will surely become forlorn if they don‘t manage to pull back two points here. I Raith Rovers v Airdrie Stark‘s Park. Pratt Street. Kirkcaldy. 3pm. SECOND DIVISION I Albion Rovers v Monfrose Cliftonhill. Coatbridge (10mins Coatdyke station). 3pm. I Stirling Albion v Queen's Park Annfield. Stirling ( 10 mins from stations). 3pm. With both teams still in contention for the second promotion place. this should be an open. attacking match.

The world’s first and fourth ranked snooker players meet in a 55 frame match over five different venues in March, among them The SECC, Glasgow and The Forum, Livingston. For Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry, the event will prove not only to be a useful prelude to April’s World Professional Championships (held as always at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre), itwill also be a lucrative week’s work: the winner will receive £30,000, while the runner-up will get two thirds of that (more than a List iourno earns in a month).

Davis -who last week won the TV Times sports personality of the year award, despite his protestations that he has no personality- may be favourite to win the match against Hendry (as he is for the World title), but is unlikely to have quite so easy a time of it as he did in a similar series last year, when the result was 6-0 in his favour. The young Edinburgh player has matured a lot since then, becoming more patient, consistent and confident - besides which, he has won his last

two encounters with the Romiord robot,

ample reason for his assertion that ‘Davis does not frighten me'. For snooker fans, the Glasgow and

Livingston events will provide a chance

to see the stars at closer quarters than is possible in the large world-ranking tournaments. Ticket prices at £8.50

and £7.50 are also far more reasonable

than one would usually have to pay to see top players in action: see listings for details of how to obtain them. (Stuart Bathgate)
