I lied Heat ( 18) (Walter Hill. US. i988) Arnold Schwarzenegger. James Belushi. Ed O‘Ross. 104 mins. Tough Moscow cop Arnie travels to Chicago on the trailof Moscow‘s most psychotic drug dealer. and slobbish Yank detective Belushi is assigned to co-ordinate with him on the case. Starting out in hostility. but finally ending up buddies. they break the rules at every turn in their attempts to bringthe wrongdoer to justice.

Glasnost era police thriller makes little of its Russian elements. instead settling down for the familiar banter and action set-pieces Walter Hill seems to be turning out in his sleep these days. even if this one does have a rather nifty bus chase sequence. Strathclyde: AMC Clydebank 10.

I lied Sorghum (15) (Zhang Yimou. China. 1987) Gong Li.Jian Weng. JiuJi. 91 mins. See panel. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I Return 01 The Living Dead Part "(18) (Ken Wiederhorn. US. 1988)James Karen.Thom Matthews. Marsha Dietlein. 89 mins. Not much to do with the original 1969 George Romero classic. instead this is a sequel/reprise to Dan O‘Bannon‘s 1984 horror-comic. The plot is pretty much the same as before. with frisky kids disturbing mysterious military gas cannisters. which the cause the local dead to rise from their graves. hungry for ‘More brains!‘.

Given the brief synopsis. you could probably write the rest yourself. The effects. like the movie as a whole. are efficient. if nothing new. Glasgow:

Cannon Clarkston Road. Odeon. Central:

Cannon. Strathclyde: AMC Clydebank 10. Odeon Ayr. Odeon Hamilton.

I Rouge Baiser(15) (Vera Belmont. France/W. Germany. 1985) Charlotte Valandrey. Lambert Wilson. Marthe Keller. 112 mins. Paris. 1952. 15 year-old Nadia divides her time between the movies and the Communist Party. But an affair with a hunky Paris Match photographer incurs the party's wrath. whilst the arrival of an old friend ofher mother‘s from a Russian labour camp forces her to question the Stalinist legacy.

Wonderful recreation of period ambience (clothes. jazz clubs etc) in this likeable tale of adolescence. with Valandrey making an appealing heroine. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I Salaam Bombay! (15) (Mira Nair. lndia/France/UK. 1988) Shafiq Syed. Raghubir Yadev. Anceta Kanwar. 95 mins. Shot on location on the streetsof Bombay. the film records the lives ofthe city's thronging street urchins. focusing on young Krishna‘s (Sycd) descent into a seedy underworld of prostitution and narcotics as he tries to earn enough money to return home to his native village.

This auspicious debut from Indian woman film-maker Nair manages to avoid the obvious. and makes its moral points through its sympathy for the remarkable children whose indomitable spirit is convincingly captured by the former documentarist‘s camera. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I Scandal (18) (MichaelCaton-Jones. UK. 1989) John Hurt. Joanne Whalley. lan McKellcn. Bridget Fonda. 114mins. See panel. Glasgow: Odeon. Edinburgh: Odeon. Central: Cannon. Strathclyde: AMC Clydebank 10. Odeon Ayr. Odeon Hamilton. Rialto.

I Seventh Seal (PG) (Ingmar Bergman. Sweden. 1957) Max Von Sydow. Gunnar Bjornstrand. Bibi Andersson. 90 mins. Knight Von Sydow returns from the Crusades to the brutal horrors of medieval Sweden. and plays chess with Death as the plague rages around him. Powerful morality tale. with a profund sense of historical cruelty. which was one of the director‘s biggest early success. Edinburgh: Edinburgh Film Guild.

I 0111 of Africa (PG) (Sydney Pollack. US.

1985) Meryl Streep. Robert Redford. Klaus Maria Brandauer. 161 mins. True story of the remarkable Karen Blixen and her love affair with both the vast continent of Africa and enigmatic game hunter Denys Finch Hatton.

A carefully measured tragic romance suffused with images of awe-inspiring beauty and topped by another flawless performance from Streep. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I Pascali's island ( 15) (James Dearden. UK. 1988) Ben Kingsley. Charles Dance. Helen Mirren. 104 mins. A typically excellent Ben Kingsley stars as a meek but perceptive spy on a small Aegean island in 1908. whose life is disrupted by the arrival ofan enigmatic English architect (Charles Dance). The latter may or may not be after some of the island‘s cherisbable antiquities. but his romance with the sensuous woman artist (Mirren) Pascali himself has long admired helps to spring the diffident Turk into action.

Elegant and not overly obvious entertainment boasts attractive locations and fine performances. but the narrative is never quite controlled enough for the film to move the viewer quite as much asone would like. Glasgow: Cannon Saucbiehall Street. Edinburgh: Cannon.

I Planes. trains and Automobiles ( 15) (John Hughes. US. 1987) Steve Martin. John Candy. Laila Robbins. 92 mins. Martin is a harrassed Chicago businessman desperate to return home from New York for the Thanksgiving celebrations. After a frenzied but unsuccessful attempt to catch the last flight home he meets Candy‘s accident prone shower curtain salesman and they inadvertently become travelling companions through treacherous snow. Hell. high water and mutual incompatibility.

Predictable and sentimental Odd Couple on the road which is genuinely funny thanks to the script and the well-played clash of personalities between the two stars. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I Play Misty For Me ( 18) (Clint Eastwood. US. 1971 ) Clint Eastwood. Jessica Walter. Donna Mills. 102 mins. Well-done thriller has jazz DJ Clint stalked by homicidal ex-fan and one-night stand Walter in a scenario not unsimilar to that of Fatal Attraction. The Misty in question isa classic piano piece by Errol Garner. Central: Regal.

I Police Academy V: Assignment Miami Beach (PG) (Alan Myerson.US.1988) Bubba Smith. David Eraf. Michael Winslow. 90mins. Latest execrable dollop of comic ineptitude has as its ingredientsa Police Chiefs‘ convention. a stolen bag of diamonds. and our lovable academy graduates on the loose in Miami. Strathclyde: Rialto.

I Powaqqatsi (PG) (Godfrey Reggio. US. 1988) 97 mins. Follow-up to Koyaam'sqatsi is another visual collage. thistime examining how Third World societies have been exploited. Once more the result is beautifully photographed. and Philip Glass again provides the impressive soundtrack. but somehow the impact of the original has been lost. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I The Presidio ( 15) (Peter llyams. US. 1988) Sean Connery. Mark llarmon. Meh Ryan. Jack Warden. 98 mins. A murdered policeman at the Presidio. a sprawling US military base perched in sight ofthe Golden Gate bridge. is the catalyst for tension between Connery‘s investigating Colonel and Harmon‘s cop. who ofcourse previously served under the older man as an MP and is now enamoured ofhis daughter.

This formula thriller with few surprises is partially redeemed by the emotional credibility Connery brings to his hackneyed role. and by director l'lyams' adept orchestration of some better than usual thick-cared mayhem. Central: Allanpark. Strathclyde: Caledonian.
