ESSENTIAL LINES
Waverley Taylor Gallery, Edinburgh Charles Stiven's conte and charcoal drawings are works at great eloquence and poweriul voice. Eschewing colour, he reduces light to lilm noir proportions and breaks down shape to its essence. Some pictures in this, his iirst solo exhibition, set anonymous buildings and lactorles inside dramatically empty skies and landscapes, but it is those which move iurther down the line oi abstraction which are most sensual and sailstylng.
Metal piping takes on the character oi bodily curves stretched with line skin. ‘Vent' has a mysteriously dark throat. ‘Severence' has the amputated beauty ol a classical statue. ‘Sllo’ has a phallic thrust which attracts with menace. Here is an artist projecting the industrial scene into images which despite a cool appearance, puisate with associations and ideas. Silven makes his work accessible by using a highly developed technique which builds his slios and waterworks, hangers and oil rigs as It out oi dust. Black and white is not a limitation but a positive strength at his work. lie can make a weighty presence iloat, a sun-board gleam or a dark opening hide mystery. (Alice Baln)

Toni Folilna- Projects and Architecture 1965-87 Until 11 Feb. In conjunction with the very lively Italian Institute in Edinburgh, the Talbot Rice presents work by one of Italy's senior architects. A harmoniser of great skill. Follina‘s technique blends the craft of building with the histories and traditions ofarchitecture and specific communities. This is the first time Follina‘s architecture has been seen in Britain and in the wake of Prince Charles' warnings to architects to make their work more environmentally acceptable. the Talbot Rice should be congratulated on its sense oftiming.

Work in the Fields oi the Bomb Until 12 Feb. Photographs by Robert del Tredici. A stunning exhibition which throws the nuclear industry, bomb-making and bomb-makers into the spotlight. Superb photography and riveting captions blend the frightening statistics and facts about radiation with a clear-headed sense of humour. This exhibition was organised by the An Lanntair Gallery in Stornoway and is well worth making a trip to see.
