The Art of SW. llayter Until 26 Feb. Major retrospective by a big name in 20th century printmaking. Something ofa scientist. Hayter developed new techniques in the colour etching and engraving fields which revitalised the print medium. Also well-known as a teacher (he had a studio in Paris and after the warin New York) Hayter was to introduce his new techniques to artists like Picasso. dc Kooning. Pollock and Rothko. This complete survey is touring the country following Hayter's death in 1988.

Compass Gallery, Glasgow There is a strange mixture of innocence and experience at the Compass Gallery this month. James Gibson, an artist who took up painting with a degree in Art History and several years as an English teacher behind him, blends elements of the naive which artists like Beryl Cook use to such effect with an awareness of academic form and painterly technique. If is an uneasy alliance and his best are those which still lean towards his earlier, simpler style of large faces and enigmatic poses.

Prints and Drawings of the WelmarRepubllc Until 11 Feb. It has been a popularshow everywhere else and it has certainly been no different in Glasgow. Glasgow painting has recently been dipped in the inspiration of such artists as appear in this exhibition— Max Beckmann. Otto Dix. George Grosz and K‘the Kollwitz. Make sure you visit this one. A well-illustrated catalogue is

Much of the figurative work, suggesting as does the influence of masters like Picasso and Spencer, as well as Scottish artists like Stephen Campbell and Neil MacPherson, does not reach the mark. Others are perky and attractive (like the little dog in Dog and houses) but slight. it seems Gibson is still selecting from a whole spectrum of choice and influence In search of new developments. Saxophonist at Harbour, one of the larger oils, is closest to reaching that goal. The man in pebbly blue has curiously puckered lips and the ship's flag behind blows In the breeze.
