DAS RHEINGOLD
Theatre Royal, Glasgow
Scottish Opera's new production at Wagner’s Rheingold was eagerly anticipated and, in the event, well worth waiting lor- particularly on the vocal side. The cast is unilormly strong, lrom Willard White's masterlul and darkly-sung Wotan to Nicholas Folwell's suppressed rage as Alberich and Felicity Palmer's perhaps slightly too steely Fricka. Star of the show lor me was Bonaventura Dottone’s Loge, always clearly and expressiver sung, but also with real characterisation of the Ariel-like lire-god. John Mauceri directed orchestra and singers with the calm contidence we have come to expect from him. Everything was very clear and controlled —too much so at times, perhaps, and one hopes that he will let himselt and his torces go a bit more it and when the Ring Cycle progresses.
Richard Jones produces and, while there are some echoes of his rather unlortunate Cosi tan Tutti at last year in the tendency for things to appear out of holes in the backdrop, there are some really inspired moments here. Particularly effective are the Nibelungs: played by young boys, they appear groaning underthe weight of their labours out at holes in the stage, like the damned in a painting by Hieronymous Bosch. The appearance at the goddess Erda is another magical moment- better not disclosed in advance. Some 01 his other ideas don't come all so well but, in a sense, some at Wagner’s scenario for this opera is unproducible. Jones and his designers are at least always interesting to watch
and don't get in the way of the music. No opera-lover will want to miss this Rheingold; even ilyou don‘t think Wagner is yourthing, this must be— apart from the language -one oi the most accessible productions of the opera one can conceive ol. The Gods are shown as all-too-human beings with whom we can readily identity. Our appetites are whetted and we remain in a state at anticipation lorthe next instalment oithis Ring! (Noel O’Regan)
