Godfrey Danadda, a young Ugandan artist who lives in a small market town. Poverty puts art beyond the reach of most people in Uganda and though Danadda always has his but full of batik and oils (on hardboard as he cannot get canvas), he has to supplement his income by working for the government - for the princely sum of £6 a month.

His work however, has riches enough. Dancers swivel in saucer-shaped skirts and a family padds down to the river with slow rhythym. Limbs are long and blend into the pattern of colour and life with ease. Given their vitality, it is not surprising that Ali is bringing oils by Banadda over for Mayfest. (Alice Dain)
