With their current revival (by Kate Brown) at Elijah Moshinky’s 1988 production at ‘La Boheme’, Scottish Opera have shown that this really is one of the gems of their repertoire. Opening in the realistically shabby Parisian student tlat used by the tour Bohemians, Michael Yeargan’s set is as it looking at a film screen, a long rectangle of lite surrounded by blackness. In it, the gang ol tour enact their scenes at poverty intertwined with ‘joie de vivre’, working well both as an ensemble and individually, Simon Keenlyside as Marcello and Patrick Power as Rodollo being especially outstanding. The 11th hour replacement by Angelique Burzynski as Mimi was less successful. Perhaps she’ll ease up, but on opening night

Also this issue, as well as ‘Das Rheingold’ (see Music Highlights page), Scottish Opera open their new production of Mozart’s ‘Don Giovanni’, underthe direction of the company’s Head of Productions, David Walsh. Taking on quite an international llavour with sets by Katherine Hysing lrom Den Norsk Opera, Oslo and costumes by Eleanore Kleibertrom Berlin's Komische Oper, the cast includes singers from both Britain and abroad. Jonathan Summers sings his first Don and American baritone Jan Oplach makes his British debut as Leporello. Last season's Mimi, Jane Eaglen, returns as Donna Anna and American soprano Kathryn Bouleyn is Donna Elvira. Song in Italian. (Carol Main)
