Veronico Cruz (PG) (Miguel Pereira, Argentina/UK, 1988) Juan Jose Camero, Gonzalo Morales, Rene Olaguivel. 96 mins. Miguel Pereira’s subtle account of the relationship between a teacher posted to a remote hamlet in the province of Juiay in the northern part of Argentina, and a young boy whose lather has left the village forever in search of work, achieves the difficult feat of tellinga small story with great compassion, while simultaneously commenting on the great'political events .in the country during the period which it covers. That ranges from the military coup of 1976 to the outbreak of the Falklands War, encompassing the national frenzy induced by the 1978 World Cup, and the notorious disappearances.
The original title of the film, La Deuda Interna, translates as The Internal Debt (Veronico Cruz is the name of the boy), and it is a much better one, containing multiple resonances. The debt is not only that owed by those middle-class , Argentinians who permitted the junta to carry out its atrocities, but also represents the film-maker’s deeply felt obligation to turn the focus of Argentine cinema away from the cosmopolitan
capital, and onto the forgotten regions
