CONVENTION TD MISS

Those dinosaurs of folk rock, Fairport Convention, are bringing their leaden pomposity to Scotland round about Burns night, but avoiding the major venues. Their tans up here can catch them at Ayr on the 25th and Kirkcaldy the next night.

STV will broadcast an informal but not irreverent programme of Burns songs, recorded last month at Dougie

MacLean‘s studios in Dunkeld, as their

contribution to the birthday celebrations ol the National songwriter, collector and poet. Archie Fisher, Dougie MacLean, Michael Marra and Rod Paterson sing songs, in various, some spontaneous, settings that vary from the traditional, to didgeridoo accompaniment, to a

compelling down-at-heel reading olAe

Fond Kiss, Mike Marra’s piano and vocals giving way to Dick Lee's sax.

Dick joins forces with Rod for an Edinburgh Folk Club concert on the 25th, and Rod solos Glasgow's Black Bull Folk Club on the 22nd. Those of you who haven’t heard Rod sing, should really do something about it. Apart from his vocal/guitar style in swing jazz numbers, his own distinctive songwriting, and his repertoire garnered from years in top tolk bands, Rod is Scotland’s leading interpreter of Burns song, marrying the melody and beauty of the Scots language in unlorced naturalness, the songs revealed as contemporary and timeless.

Blues fans and guitarists should note the two concerts of John James and Eddie Walker. At Paisley Arts Centre on
