11 may have moved with all the pace at a Mississippi delta in the afternoon sun, but North Bank’s production oi To Kill A Mocking Bird. seen recently at the RSAMD, beguiled the capacity audience with the richness oi its Southern charm.
Harper Lee’s novel is well suited to stage adaptation, thanks to the dramatic lrisson inherent in court-room conlrontation. Christopher Sergel’s version. however, deluses the tense psychodrama by injecting an air of Ianguour into proceedings. This is a bias that Alan Dobie, as the lawyer Atticus Finch, accommodates well, with the detached resonance of his voice and commandineg relaxed stage presence. introduce a sense oi inevitability into the trial of a negro peasant. unjustly accused of miscegenous rape.
The hypocrisy of Maycomb County's blind-eyed bigots proves not to be the play’s central concern, however- instead it comes to locus on skint-kneed childhood as represented by the advocate’s two children Gem and Scout.
Penny Gonshaw as the daughter and brother Gem (Nick Rogett) gradually achieve maturity as the play progresses. but not beiore expressing, coniidently. the wild-eyed joy of teenage mischief. iiendishly hatching their latest plans for the taunting oi the reclusive Boo Hadley. These excesses are eventually guelled by the level-headed Atticus and reflected upon by the middle-aged Scout (played with a melancholy wistiulness by Hildegard Neil).
The morally simplistic nature of the play’s message is compensated for by
a staging as impressive as it is
accurate. Three sturdy Southern homesteads dominated the set (Ray Lett), solid and implacable, like Atticus himself. while a constant soundtrack oi clicking cicadas heightens the atmosphere — like much else in this production. simple but effective. (Allan Brown).

a subversive and disturbing show that explores the city and the environment. but that takes its initial inspiration from an ancient Celtic poem by Taliesin. Layzell gives a discussion about the show on Fri 20 Jan at 2.30pm (Free) and a workshopon Thurs 19Jan at I 1am(Free).
