Young Guns (18) (Christopher Cain. US, 1988) Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen, Keifer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips. 117 mins. The release of Young Guns is already generating a lot of critical chat about a renaissance of the Western, just as Silverado did a couple of years ago, with pseudo-Westerns like Sunset being roped in as further evidence. The great heyday of the Western has gone. however, lost in a high-tech world of space fantasy and special effect extravaganzas which update the genre's classic mix of wide-screen action with clearly defined moral dramas.
Nonetheless, Young Guns takes an ambitious stab at breathing life into the bullet-riddled corpse, and does just enough to persuade us that the time to ride off into that final sunset hasn‘t quite arrived. The basic story is a familiar one. down to the identity of the
central character, one William Bonney,
aka Billy the Kid (Estevez). Billy is taken into the protection of an English rancher, John Tunstall (Terence Stamp), and becomes a member of the Regulators, a group of wayward youths

who protect the philanthropic rancher in return for shelter and education.
A rival rancher, Murphy (played with great relish by Western veteran Jack Palance), wants Tunstall’s ranch, and when he can‘t persuade the Englishman, has him ambushed instead, the cue for Billy and the Regulators to set out on a trail of violent revenge, culminating in a

ferocious shoot-out when they are trapped in a house by both Murphy and the US cavalry, neither of whom prove
to be a match for the brat-pack. Young Guns has its moments, and the performances from its bankable young ‘ stars are engaging enough, but I ended up feeling that they were having more fun playing at cowboys than I was I watching them. (Kenny Mathieson)
