TUCKER: THE MAN AND HIS DREAM
Tucker: The Man And His Dream (PG) «2*: (Francis Coppola, US, 1988) Jeff Bridges, Joan Allen, Martin Landau, Frederic Forrest. 110 mins. After a couple of disappointingly thin efforts as a mere hired hand with Peggy Sue Got Married and Gardens Of Stone, it’s a pleasure to see a Francis Coppola movie that the man actually seems involved in. Right from the opening moments, as a mock 1940s promotional film for auto manufacturer Preston Tucker flashes past, the resonances with Welles' fake newsreel in Citizen Kane signal the onset of a cinematic enterprise brimming with confidence.
Based on a true story, the film charts Tucker’s progress from his first idea for ‘The Car 01 Tomorrow Today‘, an automotive revolution that would galvanise the 1948 motor industry with technical innovations like seat-belts and a rear-mounted engine. Unfortunately, Tucker (engagineg played by Jeff Bridges) turns out not to have really thought out his plans in detail, and although he and his friends create quite a stir with the prototype. they manage to knock up, when big- businessgets involved the process of mass-production turns out to be somewhat problematical. However, the very suggestion of change has frightened the major Detroit operations, and they conspire with the politicians to trump up a set of fraud

charges that eventually sees Tucker‘s dream disappear in a welter of litigation.
For a start, all this is certainly an intriguing by-way of American cultural history, and although the interpretation offered veers towards the martyrdom of individual enterprise by the political muscle of the corporations, we see enough of Tucker as impractical dreamert‘o have our doubts. Needless to say, Jeff Bridges' enthusiastic arrogance, somehow likeable for its cussed insouciance, carries the day, with Martin Landau making quite an impression as the curmudgeonly old accountant carried away by Tucker’s
fervour.
Yet it‘s really Coppola's movie. Revelling in the widescreen and the painterly tonal sensibility of lighting cameraman Vittorio Storaro, there are enough outrageous match-cuts and slinky camera movements to make the cinephile positively drool, while the narrative has a controlled impetus that recalls the sheer story-telling verve of
’ the classic Hollywood productions. He
even manages to pull off a tone of self-consciousness that undercuts the sentimentality. Wonderful. (Trevor Johnston)

Delightful screen operetta using only sung dialogue, with deftness of camera movement and delicious production design which maintain the interest when the plot creaks (which it does). Portentous offering made during the Occupation as an obvious allegory for the situation facing the country. and very beautiful to behold it is too. (ilasgow: French Institute. I Who Framed Roger Rabbit? ( PG) (Robert Zemeckis. US. 1988) Bob lloskins. Joanna (‘assidy. Christopher Lloyd. 92 mins. Los Angeles. 1949, and side by side with the human population live the Toons. the cartoon characters working in the movie business. Animated star Roger Rabbit is worried about his wife Jessica's faithfulness and hires private dick Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins) to keep tabs on her. but this is merelythe prelude to the unravelling of a conspiracy that is to threaten the lives of all involved. and the very future of Toontown itself.
An incredible technical achievement for the credibility with which the cartoons interact with the human cast and stylised sets. this surefire box office winner
efficiently spoofs the film noir genre while milking its 'I‘cs Avery -stylcd highly physical sense of black comedy for all its worth. The stars cope remarkably well. but all praise is due to the learn behindthe cameras and on the animating boards. for they have returned a sense of wonder to the silver screen.
