The Hidden (18) (Jack Sholder, US, 1988) Michael Nouri, Kyle MacLachlan, 97 mins. Forviewers of a nervous disposition, orthose whose last visit to the cinema was A Room With A View, The Hidden is definitely not recommended. But, lovers of high octane, low-lite science-fiction sleaze will find it totally irresistible.
A thoroughly ingenious scenario by Bob Hunt features Kyle (Blue Velvet) MacLachlan as an unusual FBI agent involved in the search for a vile alien organism that can inhabit and transform the most mild-mannered of citizens into amoral killers and thieves with an unquenchable appetite for mayhem, fast cars and loud music. If cornered, the organism can merely slither into the next unsuspecting human frame and begin its rampage overagain.
The chase is joined by overworked Los Angeles detective Nouri who can comprehend neitherthe nature of his opponent northe strangely unemotional personality of the distinctly odd Mr Maclachlan who has a suprise of his own in store before the

A combustible cocktail of adventure, thriller and black comedy, The Hidden is all the more remarkable in that its sureiooted sense of pace and brio is the work of Jack Sholder, previously responsible torthe worst oi the Elm Street movies. Merrily pillaging from the likes of The Man Who Fell to Earth and The Terminator, reminiscent of Repo Man, The Hidden is imaginative, visceral, outrageous and wonderfully exhilarating. Unlikely to win any Oscars or respectable favour but great cinematic tun. (Allan Hunter)

I Good Morning Vietnam ( 15 ) ( Barry Levinson. CS. 1987) Robin Williams. Forrest Whitaker. 'I‘ung 'l'hanh 'l‘ran. 121 mins. At last getting the specially tailored role his improvisatory comic talent deserves. Robin Williams gives a dazzling performance as iconoclastic armed forces radio disc jockey Adrian Cronauer. assigned to 1965 Saigon and soon creating headaches for the military top brass. His morning show. with its healthy dosesof soul music and outbursts of way-out . quite irreverent humour explodes their cosy notions of broadcasting standards. but
makes him a hero amongst the ordinary fighting men.
While the more serious aspects of the film. its attempts to examine the clash of two cultures and intimate the escalation of the Vietnam conflict. can seem a little flat. this is probably because Williams' stintson the radio mike are so hilariously electrifying they leave the rest ofthc movie standing. Watch out for a host of fine supporting performances. and director Levinson's always winning way with dialogue. Glasgow: ()dcon. lidinburgh: ()dcon. Strathclyde: AMC Clydebank 111.
