PACHUKO CANTINA
Saturday the 26th sees the Grove Street restaurant ‘Pachuko Cantina‘ taking over Madisons for its 2nd anniversary celebrations. The Stomp is dedicated to black American blues music. as is the restaurant. Emphasis is placed on Bockin’ Blues, mostly from Kansas and Texas. typified by heavy boogie piano and wailing saxes. This brand of B&B along with Delta Blues nurtured in Chicago changed the lace of music in the 30s. 40s and 50s. giving birth to Rock and Roll and all its offshoots.
The evening starts at 10pm and for 2 hours the atmosphere of the Harlem Speakeasy holds sway. The early birds will be rewarded with rare blues from the 20s. 305 and 403. Past midnight to 4am the tide rises with an irresistible blend of MB. blues soul and jump blues. D.J. Brian Rae lrom Charly records will do a guest slot. Being a soul exponent in the 60s‘ era the man certainly knows his onions. Les and Simon from ‘The Bloodthirsty Pig‘ will be helping out with a playlist as well as bringing their own Rockabilly tastes to the proceedings.
A competition (entry forms from the Pachuko) will be held along with some possible Charly quizzes—tequila, free meals and records all to be given away. During the evening a suitable band will perform as well, so there's plenty happening.
Don‘t be fooled into thinking this is some quaint trip down memory lane, B&B is in everyone; pain yourself it not to move to it.
All in all ‘The Stomp“ sounds like the best crack in a long time. If it’s anything like last year, Madisons will be strollin' struttin‘ and shakin‘ well into the wee hours. (Stuart Raiker)
