HEAVY GOING IN GENOA
Genoese Drawings ol the 16th and 17th Centuries, National Gallery, Edinburgh It you happen to be studying the history of Genoese drawing, this is just the show loryou: it not it makes pretty heavy going.
Like many at the National Gallery‘s regular exhibitions, it draws on and highlights works in the permanent collection - a welcome and uselul way at getting to know parts of the collection which would otherwise be locked away in store. But the way in which it has been presented does nothing to bring the subject to lite.
It‘s a pity because as the introductory essay in the accompanying catalogue (50p) makes clear, Genoa was a lively place at this period. It was a thriving port, bristling with trade, and run by a small, greedy merchant aristocracy— just the kind at social group who were
1,. M. J ’~. ‘5 wealthy and vain enough to want to become sought-atter patrons of art. That must extravagant of patrons, Louis XIV was coming to power in France at this time and with the vogue lor baroque, Europe was entering one at its most llamboyant and exuberant penods.
Yet neither the social labric ol Genoa, nor the sort ot rich anecdotal detail that make even dull exhibitions entertaining, is included here. The connection between the Genoese society and its art is never developed, and there is no discussion of style nor how drawing was used as a means at artistic expression. The catalogue, though admirably detailed and thorough, reads with a textbook dryness. Surely there is more to be said about these drawings than the scholarly account at attribution, size, date and provence that we are given here. (Sally Kinnes)
