Lys Hansen, City Art Gallery, Edinburgh Just ten years ago, Lys Hansen returned to painting alter a gap which was titled by lamily and teaching. A period in 1985 studying in Berlin and the subsequent exhibitions both in Scotland and Germany, sealed the strength at her comeback and tired her work with a creative energy lizzing with excitement.
Hansen’s subject is the lemale lorm. Who Am I was the title of a black and white picture of a woman squeezed into herlrame. Allein (Alone) was another. This woman walks on hand and toot, her head lowered awkwardly in the
crutch at her limbs. Blue Lips, a wonderlul painting from the same period, shows woman crouched under her hands, taking a sneaky peek at the world. Dispensing with the classic ideas at realism and portraiture. Hansen three years ago was emerging through the irrepressible actions of her art.
Her more recent works show that process more thoroughly developed. In the 1987 Study tor Parts of the Body series, colour is launched into limbs and heads with a gusting energy and the lorms push with a stronger, less deprived spirit. In Swansong, the head with with Picasso-like monumentality struggles tree trom a mountainous body in a blaze at ribboned blues and reds and greens. There is no holding back.
Now, the rebirth ot Hansen's painting is almost complete, ready tor its next stage. One painting completed this year, Seated Nude, tinally draws the body together in one piece in a tentative union ol patchy colour. Another introduces a specifically male character, red and phallic, leaning tensely towards Katrine in her boat.
Despite the inclusion of some paintings which are not perhaps her most successtul, this mini-retrospective ol Lys Hansen‘s work shows her again to be an artist at immense courage and imagination, with an individual vision at the inner spirit. (Alice Bain)

It seems like a very sensible move. making the gallery more accessible to browse rs than the upstairs rooms in Hanover Street which housed it over the past three years. The first exhibition in the new premises takes stock of artists who are regulars with the gallery. Until 26 October.
