comedy on the lunacy of the nuclearage with Sellers ideally cast in three roles ( L'S President. jolly Brit captain. and demented teutonic boffin ) and Slim Pickcns the good ole boy heading for

In a narrative as straightforward and complicated as the title. three generations of women. all of them called (‘issie Colpitts. dispose of their husbands in a series of aquatic murders. whilst the numbers 1 to lot) run through the filmin the backgrounds.
Full ofthe usual ravishing visual symetries and a highly developed sense of the incongruous. Greenaway's latest sports a number of highly polished and sympathetic performances. that along with the enjoyable pastime of number spotting. makes this current effort his most accessible and pleasurable to date. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I Eighteen Again ( PG) (Paul Flaherty. CS. 1987) George Burns. Charlie Schlatter. Tony Roberts. 94 mins. Nonagenerian George Burns cast as whippersnapper company director of81 . wishes that he wasa baby of 18 years again. And guess what? Yes. indeed. his soul flies intothe body ofa college kid who's just had a near fatal accident. And vice versa. you know the sort of thing by now.
Which is another way ofsaying how tired and unfunny this all seems. The sense of wonder at Mr Burns still beingalive fades after a few minutes. and there is very little left of interest here. Strathclyde: AMCClydebank If).
I Eureka (Nic Roeg. US. 1982) Gene Ilackman. Theresa Russell. Rutger Hauer. Mickey Rourke. 12‘) mins. IIackman's prospector finds gold in the Arctic waste and later settles down to a life ofluxury on his own Caribbean island. But his daughter's relationship with a dashing playboy. and the attentions of a consortium of property developers combine to disrupt his peace of mind.
Impressive story of lust for flesh and material wealth. with metaphysical overtones thrown in. It's a heady brew all right. though the scenes amidst the frozen tundra are the most memorable and the climactic trial lets the film down badly. Glasgow: GFT. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I The Exorcist (18) (William Friedkin. US. 1973) Ellen Burstyn. Max Von Sydow. Linda Blair. 11(lmins. Earnest priest Von Sydow steps in to save poor little possessed girl Blair in this hugely convincing and effective scarefest that has stood the test of time. Glasgow: Grosvenor.

Worth seeing. Edinburgh: Cameo.

The sudden disappearance of his wife in a foreign city where he doesn't speak the language. is soon to pitch I‘ord into aplot that involves international espionage and the murky I’arisien underworld.
Good to see Polanski partially rcdeeerning himself after the soggy l’iruri's. But it is only a partiallysuccessful comeback. because this attempt at a llitchcockian thriller is really rather dog-cared in conception and sluggish of execution. though the cast are worth watching. Glasgow: Cannon Sauchiehall St. Edinburgh: Dominion I Full Metal Jacket ( 18) (Stanley Kubrick. CK. 1987) Matthew .‘vlodine. Dorian Ilarewood. l.ee Ermey. 10‘) mins. Technically effective but soulless depiction of raw Vietnam recruits as they endure basic training and the even greater horrorsof the 1%8'1'et offensive. A disappointment. Edinburgh: Edinburgh I'niversity I‘ilm Society.
I Good Morning Vietnam ( 15 i ( Barry Levinson. ES. 1987) Robin Williams. I-‘orrest Whitaker. Tung Thanh Tran. 121 mins. At last getting the speciallytailored role his improvisatory comic talent deserves. Robin Williams gives a dazzling performance as iconoclastic armed forces radio disc jockey Adrian Cronauer. assigned to 1965 Saigon and soon creating headaches for the military top brass. Ilis morning show. with its healthy dosesof soul music and outbursts of way-out. quite irreverent hunour explodes their cosy notions of broadcasting standards. but makes him a hero amongst the ordinary fighting man.
While the more serious aspects ofthe film. its attempts to examine the clash of two cultures and intimate the escalation of the Vietnam conflict. can seem a little flat. this is probably because Williams' stintson the radio mike are so hilariously electrifying they leave the rest ofthe movie standing. Watch out for a host of fine supporting performances. and director Levinson‘s always winning way with dialogue. Glasgow: Cannon Clarkston Rd. Grosvenor. ()deon. Edinburgh: ()deon. Strathclyde: AMC Clydebank 10. Central: Cannon. Regal. Strathclyde: Cannon. Kelburne. ()deon Ayr. ()deon Hamilton I Hope and Glory ( 15) (John Boorman. L'K. 1987) Sarah Miles. David llayman.
