Thanks to new laws made by the European Parliament with the full support of the Socialist Group, the quality of holiday beaches across Europe has improved beyond recognition.
Not so in the UK.
Take the scandal of the sewage being pumped into the waters around the Clyde coast.
Despite Strathclyde Regional Council’s anxiety to solve the problem, the UK government has consistently dragged its feet.

Then there’s the high level of lead in the drinking water, especially in Glasgow.
These are just some of the reasons the European Socialist Group is meeting in Glasgow next week.
Not only will the state of Scotland’s environment be on the agenda but also the key issues of jobs and investment in industry.
One thing’s for sure, though.
If Socialists aren’t ready with the answers, nobody else will be.
