The Scottish Gallery is one at the lirst galleries in Edinburgh to begin its post-Festival season and every inch ol the gallery seems to be used in its currentcrop olshows.
Occupying centre stage are new paintings and sculptures by a 36 year old Irish artist. Felim Egan. The pictures are big and abstract— large seas ot slate grey or blue. within which tloat small geometric shapes. thin as a piece at splintered ice. The surlaces are like very very line sand which has broken into tiny holes as though a wave hasjustwashed overit.
The paintings are complemented by Egan's attenuated bronze sculptures (see illustration) which reach up. as though lorthe light. like a slender new twig. Some of the terms are echoed in the paintings. The live-panelled picture Orchard lor example has the same long thin shapes. as though one at the sculptures has been pressed into the paint whilst still wet and left an impression of its shape on the canvas.
Don‘t overlook the other shows: the gallery pays close attention to its decorative arts shows which are on view in the entrance and they always show very line work. Currently on view is contemporary Norwegian jewellery

and the pieces are lull ol unusual organic lorms. Some bristle like the hairs ot a caterpillar. others look like the sort of thing Greta Garbo might have worn in Queen Christina. All are striking and original and well worth a visit.
The gallery upstairs is lull at line pictures at rich textural contrasts. There are almost smudgy looking Philipsons. a vivid MacTaggart seascape which looks as though the paint has been applied with a trowel and a lovely picture ol Summer by Joan Eardley. Sullused with green. it looks rather melancholic and the surlace has
