The Hummingbirds began life last
Amitri. He was joined in February 1987 by Fiona Haigh (guitar). Zander Lee (bass) and Stephen Boyd (drums), and the first gig took place in Dctober87.
After a relatively small number of gigs in 1988. the band have been taking time on strengthening the already strong songwriting. and preparing a more convincing live show. which can be seen at Rooftops on Wednesday 21st as part 01 the File Aid disaster benelit (which has been put back 2 weeks) Bryan explained the changes since the band‘s inception:
‘At the start we were too lightweight— itwas very indie. very Glaswegian, whereas now we have got a much harder sound which I think is more commercial. Maybe that makes it sound a bit crass— I'd just say that it is more appealing.‘

too much of the old band's sound, and what we have done since is manage to create an identity of our own for the Hummingbirds. While you want to learn from what you have done in the past, you don't want to be trapped by it.‘
‘At the very start we got quite a lot of attention — probably more than we deserved. There were 300 people at our lirst gig-which I suppose is better than the usual way bands start out playing to two people — and we weren't bad-but you realise that to compete with bands that are really good you have to puta Iotmore in.‘
The upcoming live shows will include airings of some new songs which Bryan talks about with enthusiasm — in particular Saturday Girls, Shine and White Lies. So. given their recent developments. how would he describe the Hummingbirds to any potential customers lorthe gigs?
‘I'd say we are a genuinely exciting and creative rock band who play powerful and melodic music, and sound as it we mean it. People can be assured of a short, pulsating gig.‘ (John Williamson)
