WELLIN UP
The spare, lucid tenor saxophone of Bobby Wellins isn't heard too often back up here in his native Scotland, but two appearances in the next fortnight will give audiences a chance to hear one at our most original stylists. In the forefront of British jazz during the 603, he played in the great Stan Tracey quartet, and a decade later, in a quintet with another recent Edinburgh visitor, Don Weller. He brings his own quartet to Glasgow’s Society at Musicians and Edinburgh's Music Box. See Listings.
Over in Paisley the Arts Centre hosts a lirst Jazz Festival from the 4th to 11th, the farewell concert by guitar virtuoso Martin Taylor, preceded by two other major concerts: Fat Sam's Band and their happy swing jive and songs; and the Strathclyde Youth Jazz Orchestra for openers. The week has tree lunchtime and evening sessions lrom pianist Chick Lyall, singer Madelaine McDonald, Scotbop and Ron Moore/Ricky Fernandez on muscular instrumentals, and the delighttul vocal/guitar duo oi Melanie O’Reilly and Francis Cowan. And remember, jazz tans, that the regular Sunday lunchtime informal concerts will continue on into the Autumn.
