Inspiration moves in mysterious ways. Anne Downie’s award-winning play ‘Waiting on One‘, being staged by Wildcat this month, had its first spark of life when she was on the bus one night. ‘All these women got on from the bingo, and I thought, why has this endured for so long? And why is it nearly all women who go to it?‘
She became fascinated by bingo and its role in the lives of people who play it regularly. Her mother-in-law, who plays bingo, became ’technical adviser’ to the play that resulted from her researches, but she also visited bingo halls and talked to their regulars about why they go. ‘Most of them said actually quite negative, rather sad things like, ‘It gets you out of the house’. lthink it’s probably a lifeline for some old people. It made me think that society‘s not answering a need.‘
The play is set in a bingo hall and follows the story of several women who play there, one old lady in particular. In some ways it could be seen as being not unlike Wildcat’s recent enormous hit, ‘The Steamie‘, which was set in an old-fashioned communal laundry and

illustrated how it served a social function for the women who met there, as well as a practical one. ‘In some ways the bingo hall has taken over that function,’ agrees Anne Downie. ‘There's nowhere women can go on their own that is hasslefree, where they can talk. It’s interesting though that there is an increasing number of men going to bingo halls because of unemployment.’
While ‘Waiting on One‘, like ‘The Steamie’, will incorporate music and comedy, it differs from it in that it does tell a definite story and that its serious points are probably more definitely asserted. ‘lt’s really all about options forwomen,‘ says Anne Downie. pointing out that while many of the largely working-class clientele of the bingo halls could find alternative recreation in night schools and other leisure pursuits, they can be discouraged by an ingrained lack of sell-assurance.
She hopes the final production will appeal to a broad range of people — ’I hope we get some bingo goers in the audience.’ The play's initial audience will be an unusual one, however. Funded by Strathclyde Regional Council, the Scottish Arts Council and the £10,000 provided by the Society of West End Theatres Award, Wildcat are mounting a season of free matinee performances for disadvantaged groups of people, — hoping to encourage people who rarely see theatre, because of financial or physical restrictions. There will also be evening performances open to the general public (not free) and the production tours Scotland throughout August. (Sarah Hemming).
