A summer school which promises to be worth the cost. including tuition byJacky Lansley (new director of English Dance Theatre). Rosemary Butcher (one of Britain's leading New Dance choreographers). Laurie Booth (known internationally for his work in movement theatre) and Rose English (a performance artist who has worked from both epic and personal perspectives). £1211(£85) not including accomodation.

A festival open to the public which will include classes for experienced and beginners and will focus on an international flavour to dance. Director Tom Yang has organised folk dance from Nicaragua. India. Japan. and Europe taught by a group ofprofessional dancers. Music will be provided in plenty by a number ofmusicians. A wonderful opportunity to feel the spirit ofother cultures. FOCUS ON DANCE Focus on Dance based at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama The Focus on Dance programme is out. Now in its second year, this dance festival, the biggest in Scotland, has moved from Edinburgh to Glasgow and beefed up its programme to 200 events. Allin one week. Perlormances, workshops, classes and community events packed toe to toe with hardly room to bend and stretch between.
Last year Focus on Dance came as a welcome relief in a year arid of dance performance. This year it comes as dance is in a period of lilt-oll. Glasgow's anticipation of Culture City 1990 in particular is routing for dance with funds and encouragement. Dance Theatre 01 Harlem, Moscow Classical Ballet and Netherlands Dans Theatre all make an appearance at Theatre Royal
during July and Michael Clark returns to Glasgow with his summer school. Even the Edinburgh Festival are splashing out with a new performance by the talented Clark in August. Things are looking up. But lirst, from 3—10 July Focus trots out companies like Britain's Dance Advance, a group of six Royal Ballet and Sadler's Wells whizz-kids, who bring contemporary snap to classical technique. RSAMD, are Second Stride, South Indian Splendour and Russian Steps. In between these invited guests, dance the Scottish contingent. Area One, Stirling Youth Dance, Spring, Khorus, Borders Youth Dance and others are billed in the lunchtime slots to give the local locus. Forlun there's Geographical Duvet at Third Eye Centre and Adventures In Motion Pictures, 3 new company which is hotting up the scene with numbers like ‘Does Your Crimplene Go All Shiny When You Rub’ and ‘Grecian 2000'. And Focus on Dance does not stop at performance.
This is a festival which encompasses dance from all angles. You can see an Indian dance, learn the steps of a Russian lolk dance or spend a relaxed dance with tea and the Jimmy Hutton Band. Classes are held at the RSAMD every day from 10 o’clock in the morning and are taught by some of the best, Second Stride’s director/choreographer Ian Spink, performance artist Rose English and Kirsten Ralov among them.
As the whole Focus lasts only seven days, he sure to check your programme for overlaps and plan a timetable to see as much as you can. With companies like Compagnie Preliocaj from France and the all male, all-black Phoenix Dance Company around it's a week worth planning. (Alice Bain)
