oven THE TO

George Williamson was moved to write ‘Over The Top’ by newspaper headlines two years ago about old people dying at hypothermia in winter. ‘What sort of society leaves old people to die?’ he says, pointing out that these are also the people who endured the First World War. Williamson reconstructs their youth during the war years, in a play which is the fruit of extensive research into the Gorgie/Dalry community

between August 1914 and May 1915. Local references abound: did you know that the entire Hearts team joined up together in 1914? The cast are all from the Gorgie/Dalry area. Williamson directed the play, too, using workshops within the Springwell Community Centre and incorporating drama, mime and choir, and the production will be shown at Springwell House lrom 9

The play follows the war fortunes of two Edinburgh lads who join up with the Royal Scots. The lives of the women left at home are portrayed concurrently with those at the men in the trenches: the two worlds mirroring each other. George Williamson hopes to have placed ordinary human events in a historical context, showing how the personal reflects the political. Loyalty, friendship, betrayal and collusion are explored as they occur not only between individuals, but also between nations. (Margaret Mallon)
