ACCENT ON THE FUTURE
Deciding you want to write plays is one thing, iinding someone to put them on is quite another. Getting that iirst toothold is both vitally important and frustratineg diiticult.
The Traverse Theatre, already firmly established as Scotland’s primary producer oi new work, is making a move to give more young writers that iirst break. From 17 May the theatre launches Scottish Accents ‘88, a three-week lestival in which nine playwrights will be treated to prolessional productions oi their scripts.
‘lmmediately I started working on this,’ says Jeremy liaison, SAC trainee director at the Traverse and the impetus behind the lestival, ‘l iound an incredible number oi authors. There seems to me to be a resurgence in the writing that's happening in Scotland. It teels like there’s a real wealth ot talent.‘
Choosing the writers who would spearhead the iestival was no easy task, but eventually liaison settled on tour names; Paula MacGee (Both Hands Together) whose ln Nomine Patris was a Fringe First winner in the 1986 Edinburgh Festival; Anne-Marie v Di Mambro (Sheila), the most experienced oi the tour, with popular successes such as Joe and Visible Dilterences under her belt; John McKay (Dead Dad Dog), known ior his jaunts

with the Merry Mac Fun Company and author all Love You Baby But I Gotta lion; and John Merrytield (The Way We Were), who won one oi the liadio Times Drama Awards ln1986. ln agdition to these tour there will be chances to catch readings oi three short works by writers culled lrom this year’s Student Drama Festival, plus a couple oi pertormances of ‘plays in development.‘
Beyond having the one basic stage design by Emma Fowler, there is no
overall stylistic theme to link the plays.
What they do is share an up-to-the-mlnute relevance. ‘The Traverse has had a vogue tor doing historical, epic plays,’ says liaison, ‘but these are all very much contemporary plays about Scotland now. They’re also mostly quite comic.’
liaison is quick to reject the idea that the nature of the work should imply something second rate about the iestival. ‘The audience will still expect a prolessional piece of work which is what we aim to provide. ltwill be judged against all the other Traverse productions.’ Certainly the potential at the plays is great. ‘I wanted to direct all tour,’ he enthuses. As it turns out, he is directing two: MacGee's Both Hands Together (a semi-naturalistic story at two school friends whose lives iollow very ditterent paths), and Merrytield‘s The Way We Were ('a mixture oi bizarre Drtonesque comedy and elements oi the supernatural'). Di Mambro‘s Sheila, a study 01 a student who tries to disassociate herselt from her working class background, is being directed by Liz Carruthers, while Stephen Unwin is directing McKay’s Dead Dad Dog (‘a wild Merry Mac-style comedy stretched into a play').
The three weeks culminate in a special weekend lestival which gives you the chance to see all tour plays in one go, meet the authors, enjoy a cabaret and even get an individual, prolessional assessment oi one oi your own scripts, should you be a writer yourselt. ‘We won't say your play is terrible,‘ reassures liaison. ‘There’s generally something good about every script and every writer.’ And who’s to say the people at this year’s Script Surgery won't resurtace in Scottish Accents '89?
