Edinburgh Filmhouse launch a season at Italian comedies on Sunday 22 with a screening of Domenica D’Agosto (Sunday in August, 1950), a rambling but charming debut ieature trom Luciano Emmer, which records the comings and goings on a beach in the resort oi Ostia. The iilm will be screened with a tape 01 highlights trom several oi the other iilms in the season, intended to set the tone for what virtually amounts to the rehabilitation of a neglected genre of Italian film-making.
The accent on Hen-Realism, and the more idiosyncratic developments in the tilms oi Visconti, Fellini, Antonioni, et al, permitted humour as one aspect ol otherwise seriously artistic lilms; comedies per se were shunted oil as popular cinema, and thereiore not to be taken too seriously, despite— or maybe because oi—the tact that they regularly tilled cinemas. As with classic Hollywood comedy, that barrier is now being overcome, and these films are beginning to achieve their proper prominence in the tapestry 01 Italian cinema.
The season will run until August, on a weekly basis, and is pretaced by a

The Emmet screening is iollowed by La Fortuna di Essere Donna (How Lucky to be a Woman, 1956), Alessandro Blasetti's light-weight comedy about a peasant girl, played by Sophia Loren, catapulted into movie stardom after her picture appears on a magazine cover (Tue 24—Wed 25). Luigi Comencini’s Tutti a Casa (Everybody Go Home, 1960) is a wartime film which alternates black comedy and genuine horror in its attempt to come to terms with Italy's Facist past (Thu 26).
