Joan Eardley, Art Gallery and Museum,
Kelvingrove, Glasgow. A photograph oi Joan Eardley in this exhibition shows a woman with a
round, smiling slightly weather-beaten
lace. She’s wearing a thick woolly hat and a duttel coat, clothes much more suited to the rigours ot a harsh Scottish climate than her native Sussex. The photograph may’ve been taken shortly beiore her death, iorshe looks to be in her early 403 and she died, 25 years ago, at the age oi only 42.
She has become, with every justiiication, one at the most celebrated artists at 20th century Scottish painting. She moved to Glasgow aged 19, attended the Glasgow School at Art, became a joiners labourer in the war and only
later returned to painting, taking up her
post-diploma studies in 1948. This is a small exhibition, occassioned by the giit lrom the artist's

Schwitters and had close connections with
the Stijl movement in The Hague where she lived for three years with the Dutch
authoress Til Brugman. Her life is as much
part of the history ot‘2Uth century art as her work. She died in 1978.

painting alone at the beach. She‘s standing with her back to the
‘1 camera, in lront at a vast canvas which 3 she used to weigh down with rocks. Her Q pearshaped ligure is wrapped irom

. turbulent sea is creaming over the
ueue. But best known . matinee Cinema q i run as though a wave has lust crashed
at all are her landscapes and seascapes, painted around Catterllne, a iishing village on the north east coast. Here especially can be seen her mastery in handling paint, valuing its thick, unctuous and plastic properties. One such seascape is on display here — a big dark picture which you alomst expect to darken turther beiore your
rocks. At oneside, almost out oi irame is a motorcycle and in the ioreground oi the adjacent painting (not necessarily the same painting as in the photograph) the paint has streaked and
