MUSIC LIST/JAZZ

JAZZ HIGHLIGHTS

Next month, Saxophonist Wayne Shorter arrives with his group for two April concerts, Edinburgh 8th and Glasgow 9th. The performance at the Queen‘s Hall was, for many people, including myself, the highlight oi last year‘s jazz, and the Glasgow audience will be able to hearthem in a new, and largervenue for Platform, the Govan Town Hall.

Meanwhile, in this issue, two musicians are creating music not normally heard on their instruments, on the one hand Billy Bang, brought up in Harlem and emerging as one of the most distinctive voices on the modern jazz violin. He brings a top New York quartet to his Edinburgh 18th concert including Frank Lowe on saxophone.

Ken Hyder's unique melding of celtic music in jazz is the business ofTalislter who share the bill with Billy Bang. The band, based in London for many years, has another Scot, Don Paterson on guitar, and sax, tlute and wind driven synthesiser played by Pete McPhail.

The jazz harp, too, is nowadays seldom heard. ‘The lack is due in part to the fact that 99 per cent of all harp players are women, and 90 per cent of all jazz players are men. There is very

i little space there for convergence.‘ So

says Deborah Henson Conant, see photo, who will play Edinburgh 26th, with Brian Shiels, bass guitar, and John Rae, drums; and Glasgow 23rd with the Sandy TaylorTrio. Things used to be brighter tor the harp. John Coltrane's wife Alice played. During the 50s Dorothy Ashby was prominent in New York and Corky Hale recorded with HarryJames and Billie Holliday. Henson Conant has studied with Hale, and is evolving a distinct touch, with the lyricism one would expect of the instrument which gave us the word ‘arpeggio', and a Latin turn among the mainstream ballads. But she does play with the fractured chordings of the occasional piece by Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis or even Wayne Shorter. Her enthusiasm is obvious, and she needs her sense of humour. . . ‘the saying goes that we harpists spend half our life tuning and the otherhalf playing out of tune.‘ She will give some lectures and workshops, on the history of the jazz harp and on playing techniques, atthe Edinburgh Harp Festival 25—30th.
