Edinburgh Puppet Festival, Netherbow, Edinburgh
Forthe past three years Donald Smith, Artistic Director of the Netherbow, has been proving there is tile in puppets. The Edinburgh Puppet Festival is now the largest on-going puppet iestival in Britain. Last year it drew a box oiiice oi 100% and this year’s iesiivai will be the largest event at its kind ever held in Britain.
The event grew out oi the ‘ashes’ oi the Scottish Puppet Festival which only live years ago, in 1983, was ‘a total disaster’. ‘Disaster’s a strong word’ says Smith, ‘but there were groups coming from Australia and playing to an audience at three in the Playhouse.‘
Smith and the then administrator at the Netherbow, Duncan Lowe, decided that the lault lay in the planning and organisation oi the event and not with puppetry itseli. In 1984 they mounted a ‘very unambiiious, locally orientated event, with no backing of any kind lrom anybody.’ The response was immense and they haven’t looked back.
Subsidy, however, has been harder to attract. ‘Last year the council dropped their support aiterthe event had happened. They kept saying they were going to support it but they decided, in retrospect in October, that they weren’t’ says Smith ‘it was absolutely outrageous.’ This year while they have applied tor subsidy they are hoping the lestival will break even without it.
Like pantomime, part at the appeal oi puppetry is the scarey bits, but this year in order to introduce very young children to the tun oi puppet shows there are special programmes tor the very young (243 years, though the very

His show, Princess KIIschandra Ieatures Caspar, the German equivalent of Punch and Judy. The British version oi this popular duo underwent a Cockney translormatlon, turning Punch into a rather brutish, low-lite sort oi character.The Swiss Caspar however, has excellent manners and will be deiinliely much better behaved.
