Baby Boom (PG) fir (Charles Shyer, US. 1987) Diane Keaton, Sam Shepard, Harold Ramis, Sam Wanamaker. 111 mins. J.C. (Diane Keaton) is a career-minded, tigerish working woman progressing swittly towards a coveted partnership in a management consultancy lirm. She lives in arid yuppiedom with arid yuppie Ramis, until one day she is bequeathed a bouncing baby through the untortunate demise at a cousin. Eschewing the adoption agency, she makes the dlllicult adjustment to childcare by ditching both job and lover. Moving to rural Vermont to live out her dream at country parenthood, she tinds her idealism brought down to earth by boredom and sexual lrustration, butthe marketing at her own home-made baby lood soon gets her capitalistic juices going again and hunky vet Sam Shepard pops up to provide some homespun male company.
A problematic one this. In the era 01 Fatal Attraction-style misogyny, any popular Hollywood movie that locuses on the aspirations at a single working

mother is to be welcomed, but what a shame that this predictable and rather icky comedy is a bit of a damp squib as entertainment. ThatJ.c., alter proving herselt a match for any man in the boardroom, should be prepared to relinquish her Manhattan lilestyle to become a mother and then rebuild her career on her own terms rather than those oi a patriarchal corporate structure, is in essence a progressive narrative, but her eventually-tuitilled iantasies at a big house in the country, healthy business, healthy baby, and a bit at thinking woman's crumpet in the shape at Shepard, seem to inscribe a rather conservative set at values. The result is curious, something like a leminist Frank Capra movie whose wlsttul idealism seems out at time but whose sexual politics are resolutely contemporary.
Unfortunately, Keaton is no Jimmy Stewart, and her manic perlormance curtalls one’s sympathy in a manner that the film-maker's grossly
sentimentalised babywatching and telegraphed plot development does

little to regain. Still, the movie is worth seeing in the context of the current media debate, seemingly polarised by Shere Hite and Adrian Lyne, on the
situation of women in the family and society. Just as long as you don't expect too much. (Trevor Johnston)
