_ DRAWING CONCLUSIONS
Wilkie Drawings, National Gallery. Much can hang on the turn at a head in the composition at a picture as this exhibition at Wilkie's drawings makes very clear. He was a master of drawing but his innovative, and hugely popular, subject matter oi contemporary genre scenes evidently gave him endless compositional problems in his paintings. He resolved them, iorthe most part, in sketches, and these, the bare bones oi his paintings, are shown
together with photographs of the completed pictures.
Like the National Gallery's previous mini-exhibitions, which draw attention to one particular aspect at their collection, this show has been well and clearly thought through and it makes a neat and interesting little study. (Sally Kinnes)

Studies in Urban Violence 8—22 Mar. Drawings by Derek Murray. Growing up in Glasgow. on tranquillisers since childhood. living with violence and neglect. Murray has found escape in art. Deemed mentally unstable by the RAF and stripped of his pro-boxer‘s licence. his last job was in a slaughterhouse. butchering pigs. His life plunged into further tragedy when his brother was accused of his sister‘s murder and is now serving a life sentence. These drawings come from an intensely emotiona source.
