WORLD DOMINATION ENTERPRISES
‘Art is diseased, because it isn‘t doing what it should be doing. I think that artists have got to have the courage to include what they see around them in what they produce, and not eliminate the unpleasant side of it so that the mega-companies will be interested in selling it.‘
It’s an old tune, but this time sung by Keith Dobson, vocalist with a group called World Domination Enterprises and perpetrator of a guitar sound which, he admits himself, ‘sounds like a whole load of cats being hurled at you'. ‘Dnce you've heard us a few times,’ he insists, allaying fears of thrashing musical terrorism, ‘it sounds like quite ordinary music.’
Which is true. As is so often the case, tuneless rubbish is in the ear of the beholder, and those who take the time to listen with at least half an ear can find things they never expected. Keith Dobson, a man with both ears open wide, has been (consciously or not) working towards World Dom for a long time, originally as a drummer for hippie idealists Here And Now, who travelled around the free festivals on (of course) a psychedelicalIy-painted bus.
‘Then, I was really interested in improvisation, because there was a sort of magic in music that doesn’t come out that often. I thought, if I’m going to be a musician this is what I’m going to focus on, this sort of magic thing that happens sometimes, and that's whay I was into improvisation. Then, basically, I sussed out that what it was that happened in improvisation, this magic thing, was something to do with spontanaiety. But once people

‘ . .551! have improvised a lot they very often get into a series of ruts and find they’re just as repressed, or I think even more repressed, as when they have songs or a format. And that’s why I believe on one hand in something very disciplined, and on the other hand in something totally uncontrolled and undefined. And I like putting the uncontrolled, undefined thing inside the disciplined thing and seeing how it bursts out of it. That seems to be a better recipe for hitting that magical musical high.’
The principle of tension and release is carried into World Dom's live set as they mix in more groove-oriented material, like their recentand unrepresentative single, 3 cover of LL Cool J’s ‘Radio', and even a sly version of ‘Funkytown’. ‘A lot of our songs are like really fast rock ’n’ rally-type things. Just a wild brawling crazy thing that then finishes. But then we started doing one or two other songs that were a bit longer, more stretched-out, and we found that was breaking up our set really nicely, giving it some texture.‘
World Dom’s gigs in the area are at Glasgow Rooftops on Sunday 6 and Edinburgh Venue on Monday 7. Be there or be you-know-what. . . (Mab)
