It is always a pleasure to report on a success story in the world of small-scale, scarcely-funded theatre, and Oxygen House’s venture into lunchtime theatre is just that. With their two previous seasons, the company presented Edinburgh audiences with the opportunity to see short, rarely performed plays tor £1 a head. ‘We were very surprised by the number of people who came,’ says John Mitchell, one at the founders ol the company. ‘Working on the lirst one we thought we‘d get about tour people on the first day- we got thirty.‘ The audience grew rather than declined and now the company are embarking on their third season, this time tocusing on new writing.
The idea developed during actors’ workshops at the Lyceum Theatre and Mitchell took it to Donald Smith at the Netherbow Theatre: ‘lle said yes almost immediately.’ Once launched on the project he was surprised at the sheer weight of material suitable tor the hour-long slot- previous productions have ranged from Berkolt, to Bellow to Mishima, all one-act plays not often seen because at their brevity. ‘We were surprised at how good they
all were. No less emotional lorthe very concentrated lorm,‘ says Mitchell. ‘We were also struck by the diversiticatlon.’ Many ol the plays they discovered were written in the Sixties, a period, as Mitchell points out, when experimentation was in the air. This new season, however, is devoted to more recent work, including work from
