She is well-know n for her work during the seventies and eighties and is one ofthe senior choreographers of new dance in this country. In this new piece ‘Touch the Iiarth' she collaborates with composer Michael Nyman ( Draughtsman's Contract) and visual artist Dieter I’ietsch. both artists of international stature. English Dance Theatre is one of Britain’s best-funded and highest profile middle-scale dance companies. Based in Newcastle and founded by Yair Vardi, its character has been that ol the ‘accessible‘ dance company, making modern from a traditional base.
All change. This year they leap from tradition to new. Jacky Lansley, who replaced Vardi as Artistic Director in January, is primed to put ‘Theatre' back into the company and present a very different sort of dance.
Lansley describes herself as belonging to the New Dance generation along with Rosemary Butcher, Anna Furze, Laurie Booth and Fergus Early. She was the first editor of New Dance magazine, a founder memberol X5‘ Studios and launched Giselle Enterprises, her own production company, in 1980. Up until now, the nature of her work has either kept her in

the margins or forced her into TV and theatre work as a movement director. Now she has the resources to take her form of new dance (calling it experimental keeps it marginal, she says) into the more visible, mainstream context for which English Dance Theatre have laid strong toundahons.
“We’ll be moving away from a mixed rep and be producing more project-based work, one substantial piece at a time.’ In common with others in the New Dance world she is interested in ‘breaking down the borders between actors and dancers', creating a cross-fertilisation. The third, very important element she considers essential, is content. Her first project, ‘Down To Earth‘, still in the planning stage, has a window onto environmental and conservationist subjects. In April a large community and education project will explore those issues through dance and participation in the making of the finished project. Designer Murial Douglas and composer Sekacz (working with the current 880 season) will join Jacky and the final piece will be premiered in Newcastle in the autumn.
The EDT visit to Glasgow and Edinburgh (see Performance Listings) will be the last time the old rep will be shown. Though some Iaces may remain the same, from now on they will be coming to us from a new direction. (Alice Bain)

Getthe Message: Ditlerent Systems of Communication 29 Feb—22 March. Proving that there‘s much much more to communications systems than the Post Office or British Telecom every dreamed of. Ilaggs are mounting a fascinating exhibition which looks at the incredible variety ofcommunications systems. It not only includes familiar methods like TV. radio. telephones. post. satellite and cable. but also things like pigeon post. smoke signals. beacons. talking drutns. semaphore. hieroglyphics. morse. mail boats and fan. yes fan. language. And it will also point out how if you have asight or hearing impediment. none ofthe present day systems is adequate. Braille. moon method (another form of raised lettering like Braille. but not using dots) and sign language. There will be quiz sheets and things to do. like having a goat semaphore. tin can telephones and even the subtle. fluttering art of fan language. Entries are also invited to a Dcsign-a-Stamp competition which will be judged by the Post Office. Closing date 22 May.
