The everyday story of what does and does not constitute an official secret has been running as a soap opera on our screens for some time now, with ever more incredible twists to the plot. This month, however, Wildcat Stage Productions give the comedy official status on stage, with their new musical larce ‘The Importance of Being Honest’, in which the McSween tamily accidentally become possessed of an official secret which inadvertently gets published in a butterfly magazine: a red rag to the government. Farce seemed the only suitable medium to David
McNiven, who wrote the show: ’Well this whole business is a farce — or it would be it it wasn't so serious.‘ McNiven first conceived of the idea when at the BBC during the infamous Zircon Raid, ‘People were terrified. Then it became ludicrous. They even took away reels ot Tutti Frutti — perhaps they thought it was code for

Natural Theatre Co take a different, but equally irreverent view of spy matters with their ‘Spy Society’, a spoof ‘High Society’ about Burgess, McLean and Philby. ‘I guess you could say we’ve been rather economical with the truth,’ says company administrator Ruth Travetie. The show is a comedy imagining the three spies at public school. ‘There are serious points in there though —the whole problem of what happens to people who are caught up in a tradition.‘
Natural Theatre have a strong reputation torzany, audience involved shows, and this one is no exception. ‘People should be aware of the potential of finding a spy undertheir chair,’ says Travene, enigmatically. (S.H.)
