Some British Bird Artists and their Inspiration Until 28 Feb. A rare stuffed Great Auk takes pride of place in this exhibition of natural history meets the artist. Edward Lear. Joseph Crawhall and CFTunnicliffe are among the artists included. who took a special interest in birds and their illustration. Examples from the museum‘s bird collection are displayed alongside complementary bookplates.

Chinese Bronzes - Art and Ritual Until 7 Feb. Anything which has survived nearly three thousand years instills a special awe and fascination. These bronzes from the British Museum are no exception. Vessels for wine and food offerings. weapons and chariot fittings from the Shang (c1700 BC) and Zhou (c1050 BC) dynasties. Examples from the Burrell Collection will complement the display.

A Portlolio ot Posters Until 12 Feb. The name E. McKnight Kauffer is not so well-known. but his posters are. He isthe artist behind the stylish London Underground posters of the 20s. still distinctive images today. In total 48 posters will be included in this show organised by the John Judkyn Memorial foundation. ‘To emerge from this exhibition into a grey Glasgow afternoon and see the poverty of thought in contemporary billboards is to feel the full impact of what has been lost in thisfield.‘ SK.

Marie Barbour Until 6 Feb. Strong black and white prints (primarily linocuts) which take for their inspiration the geometry and energy of industrial Glasgow. Barbouris committed to recording the dynamics of the fast-disappearing world ofheavy industry. She is a recent graduate of Glasgow School of Art. This is a touring show from the Arnolfini. Bristol.
The Animal in Photography 1843—1985 13 Feb—.5 March. Dog‘s eye views. dog. ducks and elephants sitting to attention for the fashion photographer — this exhibition shows animals by some of the world‘s most famous photographers and in some ofthe most unusual situations. Robert Doisneau (currently showing at the French Institute. Edinburgh). Richard Avedon. Eugene Atget and Garry Winogrand are among those with work included. A Place to Stay Until Nov 88. One ofthe largest exhibitions ever mounted on the subject of housing in Scotland. The exhibition traces the transformation in Springburn from a small village and industrial suburb where property was privately owned. to today's town dominated by the council-owned tower blocks where 50“} of the rsidents now live. Photographs by 19th century Springburn photographer William Graham are on display along with the work of amateurs in the following years. Domestic items illustrate the change in living conditions— from coal-fired range to gas cooker. from gramaphone to video.
