Sport Aid‘s anthem, ‘Change The World‘. is available from Monday 15 Feb on Rage Records, and hopefully about to make a pile of money forthe African famine relief fund. ltshould also bring its creators Buddy Curtess and The Grasshoppers a bit of the fame that the London-based nine-piece deserve. They were backstage at the Sport Aid benefit in Queens Park Rangers‘ ground, opening for names like Wet Wet Wet and Pepsi and Shirlie, when they got the idea of changing the words ottheir song ‘Paint The World‘ appropriately to ‘Change The World'. The organisers, and the 16.DDD-strong crowd. loved it,and it was only a matter of time before it became the theme song of the campaign. Sport Aid‘s Nick Cater istull of enthusiasm for the record, and likes the Grasshoppers' attitude. ‘lt‘s a kids‘ record,‘ he says, ‘good and catchy. I think it shows that it doesn‘t have to be boring to care. We’ve got a nice video to go with it (directed free of charge by the director of videos for bands like Doctor and The Medics), very sporty. They‘re not afraid to make tools of themselves.‘
Tony, Buddy Curtess and The Grasshoppers' keyboard player and songwriter, is on his way out to play squash when The List chases him up, so there‘s no reason to doubt his sporting credibility. As he tells it, ‘the band got together from four or five members of a football team about three years ago. There was an end-ol~season betthat I couldn‘t get a nine-piece band together.‘ Last year they played 250 gigs. This yearthey‘re going to be working for their careers plus putting in as much work as possible for Sport Aid around the country.
A future as TV stars, or at least guests of Ruby Wax, beckons, now that they have secured the post of resident band on ‘Don‘t Miss Wax‘ for six weeks. Tuesday 16 will be the live unveiling of ‘Change The World‘, and definitely the start of something big. Buy the record, sing the song, change the world. (Mab) I From this issue onwards The List will be running a regular noticeboard for Sport Aid events and information. Sport Aid are active allyearthis year raising moneyto help famine relief in Africa. Theirprogramme culminates in a world-wide event in September. Keep watching this space.
