JUST REWARDS
Last winter Andy Sheppard stormed the finals of the BBC Young Jazz Band of the Year competition. to have Weather Report‘s Joe Zawinul praise him as ‘a world class saxophone player‘. The judges then gave the award to a flashily fashionable sax quartet. Anyone watching could hear however that the youthful looking tenor player was certain to find a large and increasing audience. His consistently rewarding LP has just been released on the Antilles label and Platform bring him to Edinburgh (12th) and Glasgow (13th). See Guestlist. Edinburgh has two other noteable concerts. Platform has paired virtuoso guitarist Martin Taylor (see photo), whose technique and repertoire extend far beyond the role as Stephane Grappelli's globe trotting guitarist, in a Quartet with Dave Newton, another Scot abroad, and a thoughtful, spare and intelligent pianist, who was for so long, with Gordon Cruikshank, Brian Keddie, Kenny Ellis etc., a rhythm section regularforvisiting Queens Hall soloists. The concert on the 5th will feature his own solo performance.

Aggressive funk hop in a wealth of other influences, musicians regularly in demand for session work and touring, and a contagious enthusiasm mark Grooveyard, who play Edinburgh’s Jazz 88 on the 8th.
