There was pop music and then rock music. Traditional music became ‘iolk‘ music. 60's America married its campus egalitarianism to the beat of alternative anti-authority and conceived electric Bob Dylan and the Byrds. Folk Rock became the route back to its own culture for a generation. In England a group of young musicians coalesced under similar ideals, but to recreate an authentically British music, its own myths and idioms, and became legendary themselves as Fairport Convention. Sandy Denny’s quasi-mystical songs, Richard Thompson’s gnomic presence and dragon slaying electric guitar fixed an adolescent vision of Albion that subsequent incarnations of the band have been unable to displace. Swarbriclt’s fiery fiddle variants of celtic tunes, which propelled the band for ages, they too have gone. The current line up has an experimental, ex-Soft Machine, electronic violinist, using sequencers, phasers and pedals. You don’t have to be a Luddite to realise that it is just not. . . traditional. . . in folk rock bands. Good

There will certainly be a Cropredy 2000 (the band hosts an annual day long reunion festival concert at this village every year, with visiting friends and musicians taking turns on the grand open air stage). Today’s line up (Edinburgh 10th, Glasgow 14th) of drummer Dave Mattacks, guitarists Simon Nicol and Martin Allcock, bowman Ric Sanders and Dave Pegg, bassist also with Jethro Tull, put the hand back on the road in 1985 and are picking up a new audience with their stagey new material as well as puntlng out all the old favourites forthe Baby Boomers. But psst, you want to hear a powerful band play good Scottish jigs and reels? Battlefield are at Edinburgh’s Lyceum (7th). And do you want to hear a guitarist better than any of them? Martin Simpson is at the Edinburgh Folk Club (17th) and Glasgow’s Star Club (18th).
