Barbra Streisand’s lilms tend to grab you by the throat; either they choke you up, or you throw up. But it you have been moved by Streisand belore - and did you really despise ‘A Star is Born’ quite as much as you say you did? -you will be moved again by this true story weapie.
Streisand gives a mesmorising performance as the eccentric but not insane Claudia Draper, who killed a man and now laces being sent to a mental home because her tamin does not believe hertit to stand trial. It is not a subtle film because despite the poster’s slogan — ‘Mad as in angry, or just plain nuts’ —we are never really in any doubt that Claudia Draper is as least as sane as, well, her attorney’s Auntie. Her task is to convince the judge, her psychiatrist and her parents. but neverthe audience. Richard Dreyluss as the attorney is rightly curious as to how she developed such purely behavioural insanity as she exhibits, and the interesting part of the film comes as we delve back, through llashback and court room interrogation to a less than idyllic childhood and past. Claudia’s smothering, well-meaning parents, convincingly played by Maureen Stapleton and Karl Malden, look on with increasing horror

I The Lost Boys ( 15) (Joel Sehumacher. US. 1987) Dianne Wiest. Kiefer Sutherland. Corey Feldman. 98 mins. Disappointineg jokey and inconsistent attempt to inject fresh blood into an old genre as two brothers become involved with a seaside community infested with punk vampires.
The visuals are well handled but the influence of MTV and the decision to aim for a juvenile market make this little more than The Goonies with garlic. Glasgow; Cannon Sauchiehall Street. Edinburgh; Cannon
as the truth begins to emerge with Dreytuss all but smacking his head Sherlock Holmes style at the moment when he realises wherein lies Claudia’s callous attitude to sex and her chosen prolession as a top-class prostitute.
The film tinds it hard to elevate itsell from the TV movie genre, but in its favour, directed by Martin Hitt and produced by Streisand, it is extremely well acted with the flash backs beautitully cut to maximum ettect.
Huts also has some telling things to suggest about men, who as we know trom ‘Personal Services’, are not always the upright citizens they appear to be. We are cruelly reminded that sex is not necessarily anything to do with love, and that love is not always anything to do with kindness. ‘You think because we toss this word love around like a trisbee, that we’re all going to get warm and runny’, screams Claudia, desperate to disarm her parents of the ‘love' which they have been using as their trump card.
It may seem melodramatic, but, by the end of the film you really will care what happens to Claudia, and what did happen to the real Claudia Draper.(Stephanie Billen)

Jean‘s daughter has now grown into an alluring young woman and. through the twists of unpredictable fate. is able to wreak her revenge.
Steering this epic rural saga towards the realms of Greek tragedy. Manon is a full and satisfying second half that explores the suffering of the guilty as they paya crippling penance for man‘s greed and envy. The production values are as high as ever and Auteuil assumes Depardieu‘s mantle as the human soul of this episode in his tragi-comic development from glaikit idiot to broken-hearted suitor.
