I SOON AFTER the news that Del Amitrl had signed to ABM, and that The Painted Word were just about to start recording an album at last, comes word that the long-sutlering Kevin McDermott has linally put ink to a contractwith Island, and Goodbye Mr MacKenzie’s suitering is linally to be put at an end, though quite who the lucky company is was not being revealed to us, despite bribes at an entire carload ot unsold copies oi ‘Face To Face’. On the minus side (and Goodbye Mr MacKenzie take notel), Virgin have decided not to renew their option on the Blood Uncles, in whom they never seemed particularly interested in the tirst place.
I BEWARE the mark at The Cross! One oi the most unpleasant artetacts to cross Listenl‘s desk in quite some time is the LP ol Oueen drummer Roger Taylor’s side-project The Cross, proving it nothing else that a megastar grossing out is a more horrible sight than any mere mortal. We've been . torced, lor aesthetic reasons, to deiend some records at pretty dubious sexist nature in the past, but this one takes the Doggy-Treats. And their tour is imminent as well. Be warned.
I MUSO'S CORNER: The Edinburgh Musicians Collective, based at 11a Forth Street, now has a telephone, so any bands or musicians in the area who want to get involved, or are maybe having trouble linding gigs or rehearsal space (or have any queries at all about the Collective), give them a ring on 031-556 0690 between 2pm and 6pm, Thursday to Saturday. Oueries at other times should be directed to Paul on 556 0042 or Colin, Karen and Andy on 556 6372 (at the moment).
I GREENOCK-BASED band, Rich, have recently secured themselves a publishing deal with Chrysalis Music. Well done.
I THE McCLUSKEY BROTHERS eventually get round to releasing their single, She Said To The Driver, on D.D.T. Records this week. An excellent song, it is even betterthan most oi the
tracks on the debut album, Aware at All. Purchase immediately.
I THIS WAY UP the duo ieaturing lormer Culture Club guitarist Roy Hay, and Glaswegian vocalist, Robinson Reid, have a new single out on 25th February. ‘Louise' is probably the linest track trom their uneven debut album, and was written by Ross Campbell and Shug Brankin, iormeriy oi Wyoming (who were signed to CBS). Since then, Campbell and Brankin have parted ways with both CBS and Wyoming singer, Ewen Duncan to term a new band called Yeah! Boss. Snapped up by Virgin beiore Christmas, they start recording in March, with hopelully a law local gigs beiore that.

SINGLES
I Hue and Cry: I Retuse (Circa); Thomas Lang: The Happy Man (Epic); Jimmy Galvin: it It Takes A Miracle (Kudos). The three are not lumped together tor any reason other than the tact that they are all tine songs, superbly sung. Hue and Cry and Thomas Lang are re-releases, both much improved by the remixing subsequent to their last outings, but perhaps most interesting ot all is Galvin’s single on the independent Kudos label. While Galvin’s name sounds more like that at a iootballer than a pop star, his voice sounds more like a real voice than that at most pop stars. Comparisons with Billy MacKenzie are iustltied — and even an ex-Associate, Howard Hughes appears on piano, with backing vocals supplied by Alison Limerick (This Mortal Coil). A line debut- but all his songs can’t be this good. Can they?
