OYSTER BAND
A few years ago I watched as this band tried to please the audience at an Edinburgh Folk Festival ceilidh, wearing fixed smiles over their Hawaiian shirts and playing their sax and melodeon based dance music with lack lustre. To anyone brought up on marches and reels played with the precision, rhythmic complexity and sheer volume of a pipe band, English music seems stodgy. For years the sound of the south of the border folk rock bands was of a brontosaurus tramping on a drum kit and lumbering afterthe tune. The Oyster Band (see photo, Glasgow 4th, Edinburgh 1st) have since evolved a harder edge. The drummer, on the Wide Blue Yonder album and now full time band member, is Lax only in name and the album itself has been hanging about on top of the folk roots charts for ages, above
Fairport Convention, Bhundu Boys, Relativity, Michelle Shocked et al. The collaborative single, Ballad DfA Spycatcher, with Billy Bragg on vocals succeeded in being banned by the BBC, the lyrics being versified extracts from Peter Wright’s book, and subject to the farcical injunctions. Self penned and socially relevant songs are becoming the backbone of the band's repertoire, cooked in the flavours of fashionable roots rock. This Scottish tour was postponed last Dctoberwhen the Big Wind devastated the homes of some of the band members on the day they were leaving to come north.
Two singer/guitarists who marry a love of Scottish traditional song with a sprinkling of their own compositions have solo concerts. Dougie McLean (Glasgow 24th) has a lovely voice and a sweet delivery, sometimes too sweet in his own songs, then can change the mood completely with his sure touch on the fiddle. Rod Paterson (Edinburgh 27th) is without peer in his interpretation of the older Scots song, and especially the songs of the National Bard, whose works will feature prominently in this near Burns night concert. I believe the poet would have delighted in Rod's other affection, carefully set on the guitar. . .forthe singular melodies and cleverly convoluted lyrics of those great Gershwin, Rogers and Cole Porter love songs.
