With a confident start to their Spring season, Scottish Opera bring two new productions—The Pearl Fishers and Cosi fan tutte - to the Theatre Royal stage this month and next, moving on I to Edinburgh's Playhouse in March. Opening on Tuesday 26 is Bizet’s Pearlfishers, the story set in ancient Ceylon of two fishermen whose friendship is almost torn apart through their rival love for the priestess Leila. Most familiar must be ‘Au fond du 'temple saint’, one ofthe most beautiful operatic melodies ever and whose theme runs throughout the opera as a symbol of friendship. , Newcomers to Scottish Opera Patrick Wheatley and Kim Begley take the roles of fishermen Zurga and Madir, while Bita Cullis, who last appeared as Tytania in the 1978 production of Midsummer Night’s Dream sings the , Priestess Leila. A better known face is I John Tranter, seen recently in Billy , Budd and Aida and now singing l Nourabad, the High Priest. Director is Stephen Lawless from Glyndebourne Festival Opera partnered by conductor Peter Robinson, Assistant Music Director at ENO and Lez Brotherston,/ , designer, whose previous work includes designs forthe film Lette Brezhnev.
