Afficionados of the notorious llotel Gasdal Weekendo will know that the club has recently stopped ope rating its wild Thursday nights in The Mission in Victoria Street. But all is not lost. Scottish Ballet’s version of The ; Nutcracker begins by evoking this % world oi the child very well. On a rich : Victorian set designed by Philip 1 Prowse the children, who all give lively and enjoyable performances, demand to be the centre of attention. They are 3 oblivious to the fact that there is any other world than theirs and Elizabeth Gold makes a convincingly excited 3 Clara, thrilled to be given her present of a nutcracker shaped like a man. 1
With the change of scene into the Land oi Ice and Snow however, the . magic seems to get lost. Tristan Borrer f as the Nutcracker Prince and Eleanor 1 Moore as the Snow Queen look uneasy l together and it is not until Sally f Collard-Gentle or Kenn Burke dance 3 their brief solos as the Arabian and English dolls respectively, that the dancing begins to shine.
Though there is plenty of colour and sparkle in the sets and the costumes, the piece itself, first performed 15 years ago, now seems to have lost its imaginative freshness and, unfortuantely, much of its excitement. (Sally Kinnes)
