CRACKING THE NEW YEAR
Scottish Ballet begins the new year traditionally enough with the opening otThe Nutcracker (see photo) in Glasgow (transferring to Edinburgh, see listings). Plenty of glittery costumes and Prowse design make it an enchanting production.
Oil-stage, Scottish Ballet begins a less predictable new lite. Peter Kyle, currently director of the Queen's Hall in Hexham, takes up the new position of Chief Executive in February, while Elaine MacDonald, a principle dancer with the company for many years, takes up another new post, Artistic Controller. The more familiar titles of Artistic Director (held since the company began in the late sixties by
» «a» ,- rain .53:
Peter Darrell who sadly died last month) and the other hall of the partnership, Administrator (Robin Anderson retires this month) have disappeared.
As Chiel, Kyle is responsible tor every movement at the company. As Controller, MacDonald will be responsible tor the dancers‘ training and lorco-ordinating the visiting choreographers and directors who will be asked to till the creative role of the company. it is hoped that ‘big‘ names will be invited on a regular basis both from Britain and abroad, thus widening the scope and international status of the company’s repertoire.
