Margaret Binnie, Fine Art Society, Glasgow
Much of the pleasure of this attractive exhibition comes from the imaginative way it has been hung. Go up to the tirst floor (where the elegant Macintosh lurniture makes today’s sofa beds look like a squasy mush ol blurred lines and sloppy living) and enioythe panoramic view olthe picture Bed Balcony, Crete,on the way down. Foreground, middleground and distance are distinguished by colour changes like a 17th century landscape but this is Claude brought right up to date with its bright reds and yellows and dizzy, aerial view.
Downstairs two pastels share a wall, one of a typical wooden home in New Hampshire, one of Winter Sun on Culcreuch Pond. Each has a wonderful pool at colour in the loreground, either lemon yellow orsnowy white, and

Closed 24. 25. 3] Dec: IJan. The Observation Tree Until end Dec. Paintings. painted tin and ceramic
In the New Hampshire painting, the trees and wooden house have been whipped into a clever abstract geometry while in the other picture the snow in the middle distance gives way to unexpectedly brighter colours, falling in strong diagonal lines.
Margaret Binnie is an artistwho seems to change her whole mood with a different medium. There is an etching called lndian Horse, a lovely spiky semi-abstract in which the sort burr of etching is contrasted with the strong, pointed lines at the mane and tall but the watercolours by contrast look a little weak. They are landscape studies, forays into the different behaviour of the medium, yet none is so secure or accomplished as the pastels and drawings shown here. (Sally Kinnes)
