Transmission Gallery, Glasgow Inspiration comes from Cralgmillar, site oi the Festival of the same name and some 01 Edinburgh’s worst housing. Kevin Hannah, a graduate oi Glasgow School at Art, lives and works there.
The colour oi his paintings immediately spealts oi grim despair and despondency. Dark, lots of heavy
black line and glimmers oi hall-light combine to throw the gallery into gloomy mood. Hannah takes his experience of the present and blends it with medieval masquerade, his narratives taking on an almost lairy-tale quality with the well-woman and the bird-man as central characters.
But the paintings laclt power in their conviction. Consistency oi style can be an excellent quality but in this case has led to the paintings blurring into one. There is little to hold one single image in your mind.
ills woodcuts have more punch. Without the problem oi dramatic lighting which he wrestles with in the paintings, the heavy black edges wont with confidence. The composition at first reads as a pattern, which when unravelled leads to tales oi imprisoned children, streets on lire, a man beating his dog. But there is little horror in Hannah's images - he has translated the hardships of today into easily-digested symbols.
Perhaps ior that reason and because they would illustrate so well, Hannah’s woodcuts ought to be shown alongside text, in a book oi poems or a novel of appropriate subject. (Alice Cain)

The Calton Weavers: Glasgow Trade Unlonism1787-1987 Until end 1987. The museum is in political mood for this exhibition. re-tclling the unsung story of the first martyrs to trade unionism and the movement‘s subsequent course. Ken Currie‘s work illustrating this theme is the first major mural commission from Glasgow District Council since the Banqueting Hall, City Chambers, was completed in the 1890s.

Schools Design '87 Until Sat 28 Nov. This is the third year that the Design Centre Scotland has had a separate competition from the London head office. This exhibition of winning entries hopes to demonstrate the high standard of design education in schools.
Design II Again Until Mon 28 Dec. The challenge from the Design Council was for designers to look again and redesign.
Kettles. fishing reels and a new design for a condom holder! have been given a new look. sometimes surprising. Three Scottish designers are represented — Fred Birse with a revamp on the salt and pepper shake. Stephen French and his fibre optic carpets and Roy Stewart with a re-design for a wallpaper stripper.

Barrie Coolt Spray Paintings 1967-79 Large abstract air-brush paintings like huge glinting Venetian blinds. Cook‘s stripes in black and blue shimmer with precision. This selection is part of an exhibition first shown at the lkon Gallery. Pity that some of his later works were not shown.
David Linley- Paintings Until Sat 5 Dec. Linley sensitively interprets a landscape made up of dreams and recollections. Though dark. his paintings have an earthy nostalgia which is at once mysterious and inviting. The Mountain. the Tartan, the Glen and the Garden Until Sat 5 Dec. The first in aseries of installation commissions for the foyer at Third Eye. Tommy Lydon uses old bits and pieces on the wall. From painted antlers grow the dangers of the glen and the mountain is made of old beer cans. A bit of fun with a serious aside. Jane Brettle Until Sat 5 Dec.
