THEMES AND VARIATIONS

New music has one oi its sporadic outbursts at the beginning oi December. On Tuesday 1 Dec, Edinburgh Contemporary Arts Trust presents its tribute to the American composer Charles lves and then on the weekend of 5 a 6 December, the New Music Group oi Scotland’s Edinburgh and Glasgow periormances ieature new Scottish electro-acoustic music. With guest director Lyell Cresswell (see photo), ECAT’s Oueen’s iiall Concert is more or less ali lves, apart irom such gems as Stephen Foster’s ‘My Old Kentucky Home’ and hymns ‘Roclt of Ages’ and ’Are You Washed7’. ‘Ali,’ says Cresswell, ‘there tor a reason’, which will no doubt be made pertectiy clear it you go to the concert. Out ior now, it might help to know that, like countless composers beiore him, ives also took inspiration irom the work of others. The Trio tor Violin, Cello and Plano (periortned on this occasion by Andrea Jacobs, Marti Bailey and Leon Coates) Is a good example oi his mastery oi the use oi quotation, quoting you’ve guessed it- iines irom ‘My Old Kentucky llome’ and ‘Rocit oi Ages’. ‘Are You Washed7’, that grand old Salvation Army hymn, appears in

‘General William Booth Enters into Heaven’, its original version giving a sharp contrast with lves’ use oi it.

‘it is the songs,’ says Cressweil. ‘That give some insight into essence oi his music and cover the whole range oi moods and styles which characterise his whole output.’ Cresswell himseli is not beyond taiting inspiration irom another composer and the concert also includes the premiere oi ’Variatlons on a Theme’ by Charles lves, specially commissioned by ECAT as part oi its policy oi a new work ior each oi this season’s concerts. A set oi eleven variations on ‘Songs My Mother Taught Me’, it’s scored ior iiute (Anne Evans) and cello. (Cami Main).
