: - A . City Arts Centre, Edinburgh The title is Critical Realism. The sub-title is Britain in the 1980’s through the work at 28 artists. They are painters and sculptors ol society, our consumerism, our politics, our leellngs. In a figurative language, i.e. the one generally reckoned to be the most accessible to the general public, these artists create to comment.
In Dollar, ‘First Impressions Count’ says Elizabeth Mulholland, who paints the town like a cardboard cut-out. The streets are propped up like a film lot and the shoppers have that twin-set

First solo exhibition for this North-East artist in four years. Fraser moves from abstraction towards figuration over a series of seven large canvases. In the upper gallery, drawings and sketches show the workings of the larger paintings. Artists in Residence Glyn Banks and Hannah Vowles who work under the name ‘Art in Ruins‘ will be working at the university until spring. But under this banner, it is not the painting but the photographs, cartoons and sculpture which best make comment on the way we live today. Jo Spence and Rosy Martin's series ol photographs which recreate Spence's lite as a child are captivating and Steve Bell’s cartoon dog sums up the crazy world 01 politics and advertising by pissing on a billboard. Renewal. this exhibition prepares the way for the Vision Of Edinburgh conference to be held in the Physicians‘ Hall, Edinburgh on 28 Nov. The exhibition displays some current projects for the Old Town including the strategy for redeveloping the Canongate.

Stephan McKeown, Ilene Sterns, Gerald Weinstein and Martin Weinstein. Art in General was founded in 1980 by a group of artists fed up with fashion trends in art and determined to show the art which slipped that fickle net. In a space donated by the General Manufacturing Company their rule is to show group exhibitions to bring as much work as possible to public attention. This is an exchange show and 369 will be taking three Scottish artists to New York next year.
