As the Fruitmarket closes on an important Italian painter, the ' GMA opens with an important Italian sculptor, also little known in this country. His last exhibition in this country was at the Tate in 1960. Ninety exhibits including sculpture, jewellery, prints and drawings will cover this artist’s work from the 30’s to the present day. Manzu’s reliefs for Salzburg Cathedral and St. Peter’s in the Vatican indicate his stature both in his own country and abroad. The exhibition is being opened by the Italian President, Signor Francesco Cossiga.

Scotland and the Netherlands Until end December. A small exhibition in the entrance hall. The not unhistoric surname Fleming is one of the few remaining hangovers from the influx of Flemish weavers who were invited to Scotland to pass on their skills so as to boost Scotland’s textile industry
following the 400 year-old act of 1587.

369 Gallery, Edinburgh It’s a two-man show downstairs at 359 Gallery. Christie Cameron takes top-billing but his dad has a wall at gems on the side.
The triendliness oi their pairing is repeated in the work oi both. All is uplilting in this show. Only a year ago Christie Cameron’s paintings were in the llgurative style associated with the young Glasgow gang. It was impossible not to whisper Stephen Campbell at the sight at them. Who came tlrst was irrelevant by that stage and Cameron’s work seemed doomed in the other’s shadow. Until now. In this exhibition his painting has broken away and taken its own path, one which seems more natural and relaxed. His love oi nature still shines through, but the horses and dogs and blue birds are

have lept into a more imagined, more magical space.
Christie’s dad, a lellow lover oi nature by the looks oi his watercolours, also dips into the world oi the comic. His little cartoons like Victorian postcards are penned with daltness like ‘It’s pure sikiolligy kid. Go in and eat the big ham.’ Whatever that means.
This is a joy at an exhibition.
Upstairs, work irom Art in General, a New York gallery joining with 369 in an exchange exhibition (next spring 3 irom Scotland show in the Big Apple) is less inspiring. A llat urban gloss seems to cover every one oi the tour on show. There’s a sanitlsed leel about the work. It is perhaps unlair to judge on lirst impressions -the work may say more in their own city, but then the challenge

Gerald Weinstein’s photographs 01 huge, industrial machinery and spaces are technically good but have lrankly been done irom all angles belore and Martin Weinstein’s paintings are pretty but vacuous. The large pair have visionary promises without coming up with the goods. Stephen McKeown's painting has more guts and like David Salle, he treats his surlace like a lilm still adding bits and pieces to disturb the space. They just seem too clean. llene Sterns has made a Remembrance installation tor the First World War. in the light oi last Sunday’s bombings in Northern Ireland however, it makes light and superlicial reading. Joyce Cairns uses expressive colour to depict scenes from her own experience in nightmare-like vividness. Ian Howard cones are among the repertoire he uses to construct his theatrical paintings and Ian Mackenzie-Smith is perhaps best-known for his work as Director of Aberdeen Art Gallery.
